Trek up into the Annapurna Sanctuary to encounter huge peaks that touch the heavens. From jungles harbouring tigers and elephants to high alpine passes with rhododendron forests, this is a place of enormous biological diversity. It is also a mysterious realm. Buddhist monasteries perch on high cliffs, their religious practices of 2000 years still so very much alive. In remote, reclusive Bhutan the past traditions still shape every aspect of living. Grandeur, inspiration, wonder, and delight. To explore the Himalaya is to discover the soul of the planet... the essence of life.

For 40 years, Ric Careless has worked to preserve the vast wilderness of British Columbia. For this he has been awarded the Order of BC. A world explorer, he delights in sharing his love of nature, beauty and spirit through his photography and stories.

July13 --   Confabulation

To “confabulate” is to fabricate imaginary experiences: hence the fanciful and fearless music of David Woodhead’s Confabulation, incorporating influences from Oliver Schroer’s visionary folk to Carla Bley’s whimsical jazz, with Cedric Smith (Perth County Conspiracy) adding yet another dimension with compelling spoken word contributions. Featured are stellar players from both the roots and jazz genres, including the brilliant young Jaron Freeman-Fox (violin), the Shuffle Demons’ Richard Underhill (saxophone), and the adventurous keyboardist Doug Wilde (Manteca, with sympatico drummer Rich Greenspoon (Stewed Tomatoes) as well as Woodhead who not only has a distinctive approach to fretless bass but also explores new territory on finger-style ukulele. Then it’s all about interplay - musical conversations and fabrications from an imaginary coffeehouse late one night, where folk, jazz and poetry collide.

July 14 -- Driftwood Players

Brenton versus Brenton and Last Panto in Little Grimley. Both plays are written by David Tristram
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Directed by Barb McColl.

Summer’s coming and there’s lots to laugh about! Driftwood Players provides an evening of hilarious nonsense in the form of two classic British comedies by David Tristram.

“Brenton Versus Brenton” bills itself as “an epic saga of lust, greed, power, and wealth”. It is, in fact, an outrageous spoof of American soaps, set in the manic world of Chicago's biggest advertising agency.

What is the dark secret which enflames the Brenton family feud? Who is the mysterious Eddie? And just what was De ke Brenton doing down on the farm?

All the answers and more are revealed in this fast-paced, laugh-a-line situation comedy.

“The Last Panto in Little Grimley” focuses on the misfortunes of the Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society, an enthusiastic group of four very amateur actors (well, three actors and the lighting and set bloke) who for the first time in recent history turned a profit with their last play. Leader Gordon, having authored that unexpected success, announces he is going to write their next production too -- a pantomime! Membership is still only four and it appears that a sex comedy may be the only hope of the group’s survival. Can this odd collection of thespians succeed with a sex panto.....??

July 16 --  Anna Beaumont

Featuring Paul Steenhuis on bass & guitar.

Anna Beaumont Singer, Composer, Teacher and Workshop facilitator In the past year, Anna was a feature performer at the World Kindness Concert in Vancouver and at the opening VIP gala for Deepak Chopra's presentations in Edmonton and Calgary. She sang in her regular appearance for the Edmonton International Jazz Festival in June, and at other concerts in Alberta and BC throughout the year. In addition to teaching her voice courses across western Canada Anna has written the songs and recorded her fourth CD, The Doorway.

There comes a time when one's life meets one's purpose. For Anna, that time came when all roads led her to the mystical love poetry and wisdom of Rumi and Hafiz, Sufi poets from the 13th and 14th centuries. Shaded with jazz, Celtic and Middle Eastern influences, the inspirational songs on The Doorway CD weave together the many genres that have coloured Anna's life thus far.

Edmonton Journal's Roger Levesque comments, "Beaumont's commitment comes through in some of her best singing ever. Anna's focus on themes of spirituality embodies a real search for truth and ancient wisdom that deserves an audience, whether you're a Rumi fan or not."

July 17 --  Nir Blu & Jess Hart

Piano Rocker NIR BLU is known for his unique compositions and innovative performances, often projecting his own 3D graphic art in strange places or experimenting with electronics while ripping apart the piano with his infectious songs. Genre transcending, his music is best described as melodic piano metal, but that doesn’t stop electronic grunge ballads, chill-out acid lounge or gypsy jazz jigs from finding their way onto his eclectic albums.

“Montrealer Nir Blu’s debut is darker and more ominously textured than the innocent name implies. Tracks like “So Fucking Happy” owe a great deal to Pink Floyd’s better spatial jams.” (Erik Leijon, Montreal Mirror.)

“Nir Blu is very mysterious. Sleepyhead really caught my attention.” (Julie Remy, CBC Radio.)

Title track “Sleepyhead” debuted as #11 on University charts and won best BC music video at the Okanagan International Film Festival in 2010.

On January 8th, 2010 Nir Blu released his sophomore Canadian album Egress online. A mix of electronic ethereal grunge, danceable psycho jazz and gas mask love songs, the dark album has been viral. Egress was downloaded over 100,000 times, reviewed on music blogs and played on radio shows in Europe, Asia, South America, the United States and Canada. NIR BLU is now based in Vancouver, BC, where he is touring with his band and working on his third album.

JESS HART is an accomplished singer/songwriter who is appreciated for her refreshing combination of thoughtful lyrics and unique vocal and musical style. A blend of folk and grunge influences can be noted in her acoustic rock compositions which feature themes that vary from media concentration and isolation to the exploration of contemporary ideologies regarding corporate ownership, consumer culture and their implications on society. Straying from the typical female singer/songwriter love ballad, Hart views music as a vehicle for change. Hart delved into the music scene in 2005, performing at several highly esteemed singer/songwriter venues. At this time she recorded her debut self-titled EP, produced by Dominique Messier in collaboration with Studios Piccolo Productions in Montreal. Her music has been featured on CBC Radio 1& 3, CITR, CIUT, CHOQ FM, CJLO and CKUT, where Hart was featured as resident artist, June ’07. Hart’s debut self-produced album “Incorporated” launched in August of 2009.
