The Artists:

‘Kunda’ means family, and thus is very fitting for this multi-cultural group of talented artists from several regions of Africa, as well as Canada, who have come together in unity to share African culture through a family-orientated show, also displaying Canada’s ethnic diversity, and encouraging people of all cultural backgrounds to come together and share ideas, beliefs, and traditions, to eliminate boundaries, interact, and join together in peace, unity, and harmony, as one world, one love, and one people... one family.

Fronted by local Sunshine Coast resident Kocassale Dioubate, a griot (traditional story-teller, musician, entertainer, and keeper of tribal history and tradition) from the Mandingo tribe of Guinea, West Africa, together with partner Sasha Belle, Kunda is a collaboration of musicians and dancers who all have well over a decade of experience performing and touring throughout Africa, Europe, North & Central America… Super-talent, Kurai Mubaiwa, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, dancer, and composer, from Zimbabwe will also be gracing the stage, as well as percussionist and phenomenal dancer Mohamed Duranteau from Guinea, West Africa.

The Performance:

Packed with color and energy, Kunda’s performance is rhythmic and joyous! July 8 --  Sensation of Magic: An Evening of Wonders

Vitaly Beckman

“Jaw-dropping show” - The Province
"Inspires Wonder" - The Vancouver Sun
"Blows Minds" - The Vancouver Courier

The Show: Through the arts and crafts of illusion, Beckman creates a performance brimming with bewilderment and wonder; he performs jaw‐dropping, mind‐bending magic. Audiences that came to see his shows leave the performance stunned, shaking their heads, unable to comprehend what they just experienced.

Highlights: In Sensation of Magic, Beckman takes great pride in the fact that every illusion in the show is an "impossible dream" to accomplish. They include “Super Vision,” where he demonstrates his ability by reading from borrowed newspapers, from a distance of up to 50 ft. Beckman can make people disappear from ordinary photographs and appear on another. He also demonstrates object levitation, a paintbrush that paints by itself, escapes from chains using only mind power, and makes drawings of objects turn into the real thing: a concrete example of his belief that dreams can become reality.

This show includes two new illusions: A Mystery in Your Own Hands, where a playing card is teleported from one audience member to another, and Life from a Picture, where he makes a magazine photograph come to life.

"The show is not just magic,” says Beckman, “It’s about the realization of our dreams and the celebration of the human spirit. With the belief that we are only limited by our own imagination, the audience gets to experience the sensation that nothing is impossible, and that they can realize their dreams, or experience the sensation of how would life be, if there were no limitations.”

"That is astonishing!" - CBC Radio
"How did you do that?!" - Sophie Lui, Global BC News
"That's amazing! ...Love it!" - Michael Eckford, Urban Rush
"Unbelievable magic" - Johanna Ward, The Express

Vitaly Beckman: Vitaly Beckman is an accomplished stage illusionist. He has performed internationally in theatres, at corporate and charity events, and on TV and radio. Born in Belarus, he grew up in the Middle East, where he began practicing magic at the age of fifteen. He has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia since 2008.

July 10 -- Driftwood Players: Riverside Drive & Central Park West

A wonderfully entertaining pair of one-act plays, Central Park West/ Riverside Drive offer a rare opportunity to re-discover the joys of one of the most prolific American comedians. It's Woody Allen at his very best -- very smarmy, a little raunchy, and very funny.

In both of these plays Woody Allen continues his hallmark uncovering of secret affairs and the way infidelity can affect a marriage or a relationship.

Central Park West
Phyllis (Mary Ellen Shimell), an alcoholic psychologist who has just learned of her husband's extramarital affair. She believes he's been sleeping with Carol (Anna Fairley), a career shopper, while husbands Sam (Tom Cantley) and Howard (Todd Alain) each attempt to deal with the news -- and their dysfunctional spouses -- in the most thoroughly unconventional of ways (Sam proposes marriage; Howard cooks) – and then of course there’s the young ingénue Juliet (Sophie Ballantyne) who makes things even more difficult.

Riverside Drive
Manhattan's Riverside Drive is the very public setting for semi- successful novelist Jim (Derek Browning) to butt heads with a certifiable nutcase (Stephen Archibald) who has been stalking him for partnership rights. Supremely neurotic and devoid of any trace of reality, Fred draws out one unexpected laugh after another, from his alien brainwave activity to the semantics of contemporary psychiatry. The final show-down comes with the apparent “accident” to Jim’s mistress Barbara (Marilyn Browning).

July 16 --  Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything

Jaron Feeman-Fox
Contorting the violin into new traditions, violinist/composer Jaron Freeman-Fox dances down the fine line between the beautiful and the ridiculous, while redefining what the violin can do. Having played on over 30 albums (Jayme Stone, Autorickshaw, David Celia) and constantly touring as a side-man with bands such as Delhi 2 Dublin or The David Woodhead Confabulation, Freeman-Fox fuses his roots of Celtic and bluegrass fiddling with his study of Indian classical music and jazz, while playing the 5-string violins of his late mentor; fiddle pioneer Oliver Schroer. At age 14 Jaron began a close apprenticeship with the fiddler/composer Oliver Schroer, which lasted until Shroer's death from Leukemia in 2008

In 2010 Jaron released his celebrated instrumental debut album Manic Almanac : Slow M'bius (currently nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards!) and formed his fiery band The Opposite of Everything who have been playing constantly ever since. In 2011 Jaron has performed in Brunei, Indonesia, Ireland, England, throughout the US and at
festivals across Canada, for crowds of over 100,000, royalty, and audiences dressed as wizards or wild animals. Now based out of Toronto Ontario, Jaron is currently touring full time, in high demand as a session musician and collaborator, and working on a new album with The Opposite of Everything for release in early 2012.

The Opposite of Everything:
Described as 'Gogol Bordello meets Frank Zappa meets The PunchBrothers', The Opposite of Everything transform Freeman-Fox's intricate compositions into an infectious party! With a diverse cast of Toronto's finest and most adventurous musicians, this band somehow combines bluegrass with Indian music, African beats with sea shanties, or klezmer with the blues, and make it sound like the most natural thing in the world.
