PRESIDENT'S REPORT

We have had yet another successful year at the Heritage Playhouse and feel we are definitely an essential part of the arts scene on the Sunshine Coast. Hardly a weekend in the Heritage Playhouse has been free. We also produced, with the partnership of Driftwood Players, our 6th annual Showcase of the Performing Arts in July.

This past year has seen the exterior of the building newly painted with great care and respect  by Matthew Kliewer with paint sold to us at a very reasonable price by Benjamin Moore Paints, the firm which originally donated paint for the exterior. We were able to pay for this by grants from the SCRD and by private donation.

Also this year we were delighted to receive new black stage curtains for which we are delighted to give thanks to the Vancouver Foundation, which has also generously supported us in the past, plus donations from Don Chapman and Bill Tierney, two  generous donors to whom we are constantly grateful.

Bookings come in at a steady pace and we have a loyal band of user groups who take great pride in performing at the Playhouse. The web site has a display of all events that take place here and we have to thank Daniel Neff for his volunteered support in this. Check it for future performances by the month.

This facility could not exist without its volunteers and I would like to single out a few special names. Sandi McGinnis who changes the sign board and who places the telephone message; John Bolton who made the target sign and who has done all our other signage; Patrick Davis who rustles up all our volunteer ushers, concession  and box office people. Joan Pettersen who has taken over cleaning duties since Jenny Gipps has moved to Cloverdale. She¹s swiftly learned what being a director is all about! I must also mention Barb Bourns, a member of the Gibsons Garden Club, who almost single handily maintains our landscaping and who does so in all weathers. And then there are all our volunteers and our amazingly dedicated directors. Wow!

This year at SOPA we inaugurated the “Hit the Target Club”. Anyone who donates $100.00 gets their name on a plaque...and a tax deductible receipt...possibly more important! The Target is....the outstanding debt we have with the Sunshine Coast Credit Union...we want to get it to zero! And when we reach that day in the not too distant future, we¹re going to have a well-deserved party. Watch for announcements in 2008.

Thank you all for your continued support.

THE GRANT'S COMMITTEE REPORT

T
he Heritage Playhouse looks like new again!  And it was beginning to look a bit dog-eared.  Through the generous support of the Sunshine Coast Regional District, the Greater Gibsons Community Participation Fund and our private donors, we were able to have the building painted this summer.  This is the first time it has been refurbished since it's opening as a theatre for the performing arts in 2000.  Carpet One Decorating Solutions kindly gave us the Benjamin Moore paint at a reduced cost and this definitely enabled us to get the work done this summer.  We very much appreciate their ongoing support of heritage buildings on the Coast.  Mathew Kliewer Art & Design did an excellent job of painting the building.  On behalf of all the directors, volunteers and members, we thank you again for your generous support.
Sharon O'Brien, Grants Committee

THE BLACKS

Our new custom made black curtains in the auditorium have given a real professional ambience to the stage.  We would like to thank Sharon O¹Brien and Chrystal Garrick for putting a grant proposal together and the  Vancouver Foundation for again being so considerate of our needs. The foundation wrote to us saying how delighted they were to hear about the new flexibility we now have in set and lighting design. We also wish to thank the Dr. Lloyd and Kay Chapman Foundation and Bill and Hilda Tierney for their contributions towards the blacks. We are fortunate to have such considerate and  special donors.

THANK YOU

A special volunteer … Sandi McGinnis.  The ever reliable Sandi has taken responsibility for changing the sign for up coming shows. Not only does she do this task, but she volunteers as an usher, concession person and ticket taker.  Thank you Sandi...what would we do without you.

I
n the hallway are some new plaques.  We wish to thank John Bolton and Patrick Davis.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST

  • RITA COSTANZI: We were delighted to have Rita perform at the Playhouse prior to her performance at Harp Day at Festival Vancouver. Not only were we privileged to hear Rita enthral us with her harp playing but we also saw her perform in Kico Gonzalez-Risso’s. A Score to Settle. As David Gordon Duke said in his review in the Vancouver Sun this vehicle for Costanzi is almost indescribably wonderful....Costanzi is a naturally gifted performer; this remarkable piece reveals her as a polished, energetic comic actress.

  • TALKING HEADS: CE Productions recently put on another two of Alan Bennett’s wry monologues. Colleen Elson performed “Waiting for the Telegram" and Nest Lewis performed “Miss Fozzard finds her feet”. Elson and Lewis have performed others of his  Talking Heads monologues in the past and find them riveting observations of the human condition. These were produced as a fundraiser for the Playhouse and raised over a $1,000.

  • Lorne elliot: Lorne, well known all over Canada for hosting the CBC programme  “Madly off in all Directions”, performed in the Playhouse recently in an excruciatingly funny evening called “Collected Mistakes”. It was a delight to have the theatre full of laughter as we responded to this "master of mirth”. Come again soon please.

  •  FRINGE BENEFITS: And that¹s Jem Rolls, a performer on the fringe circuit who came back to the Playhouse for the second time...and hopes to be here again next year. As Peter Birnis said in the sun…”a talented wordsmith” who incidentally just loves our theatre...one of the nicest he¹s ever seen he told us.

HIT THE TARGET CLUB

We were saddened to hear of the sad and sudden death of Barb Bourns, our volunteer gardener. Barb was there every Wednesday at the Playhouse, rain or shine, smiling as she tackled the weeds and cursed the deer which 'knew nothing about pruning'! She was always accompanied by her little white poodle and she also persuaded her daughter and sister to lend a hand.

We honoured her effort with a plaque which she was delighted to receive even though, in Barb fashion, she said 'we shouldn't have'. We shall miss her. Barb’s plaque is on the wall opposite the office.
