INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Happy New Year!! First and foremost, thank you to all who have volunteered time, donated materials and supported Heritage Playhouse events. Without your co-operation and support we could not have this fantastic venue! The Heritage Playhouse has been open for 9 months now. Booking have been steady and 2001 is looking even more exciting! Since the last newsletter we are sorry that the following will no longer be able to assist the HPMC:- David Short (now a travelin’man); Dianne Evans (get well soon); and James Bennett (new owner of Gibsons Animal Hosp.). Thank you for your many hours of support, professionalism and expertise in developing the “foundation” for the Playhouse Management. Welcome to Bernie Garrison. If you are interested in filling one of the vacant positions of the HPMC, please call, fax 886-8998 or e-mail manager@heritageplayhouse.com The positions needed are: volunteer co-ordinator, publicity/sponsor and grant/fund-raiser. These would require a commitment of approximately 10 hours a month and attendance at HPMC meetings once a month. The Heritage Playhouse is really an exciting, satisfying and challenging commitment!! Also volunteering are our 2 Youth Options students, Danielle Fraser and Tanya Service. They have committed to 100 hours to have the opportunity of working in all aspects of maintenance and operations of the Heritage Playhouse. In return for this commitment they will receive an $800 education grant towards post secondary studies. Kerry Mills and Marilyn Browning are sharing the position of booking agents for the next three months. Kerry is our resident technician (Sheila Sorenson is his alternate) and Marilyn has experience in theatre organization and production. If anyone would like to book an event, or has an idea to be pursued, suggestions or constructive criticisms, please leave a message at the Heritage Playhouse 886-8998. The Heritage Playhouse is open each Wednesday, 9:30am to 12:30. Yolanda Bedford has been volunteering during these times. She has been working very hard at developing Volunteer lists and contacting people for various work bees. If you could volunteer an hour or two for a Wednesday morning (please, please, please!) please leave a message. We’ll sign you up. We are now working on the calendar for 2001. Thank you to Yolanda and the Playhouse Auxiliary for organizing two very successful volunteer appreciation events. Daniel Neff has developed a website for the Playhouse www.heritageplayhouse.com. If you have access to the Internet, please log in and have a look. There are also areas which give information for the Heritage Society and Driftwood Players. Thank you so much to David Short for supporting this site financially for this year. Anyone interested for next year? The cost is Approximately $350.00 *The HPMC is a committee of the GLHS. It deals with the day to day activities and general management of the Heritage Playhouse. |

HERITAGE PLAYHOUSE SOUND SYSTEM Although the Heritage Playhouse opened on April 29, 2000, and looked complete, there were many items not affordable at the time. One of these things was a sound system. The Board of Directors was most delighted, therefore, to receive on January 10, 2001 $2000.00 towards this from an anonymous donor. John Reynolds our MP presented this to us on the steps of the Playhouse. At the same time cheques were presented to the Winegarden Waterfront Park, the Maritime History Museum and the Elphinstone Pioneer Museum. It was really thrilling to be the recipients of such generosity. We now have a good start on this major purchase. |

TOWN OF GIBSONS HERITAGE COMMISSION The Gibsons Heritage Advisory Commission has been formed. David Short was elected as chair of the commission. The board of directors is as follows: Stephen Hanneman, Elaine Jackson, Barry Janyk, Robert Nygren, Judith Reeves, David Short and Tom Lavis. The Town of Gibsons will be holding Heritage Week from February 19th - 24th. The theme is “Transportation”. Activities will be centered on the wharf and lower Gibsons. Art displays featuring local artists and relating to Gibsons Heritage and the transportation theme will be displayed in the wharfinger’s building, and in local stores, as will videotapes depicting the Town’s rich heritage. As well, a display of old cars will be held on the wharf. An important free workshop will be held on the 24th between 11am and 3pm. Don Luxton from B.C Heritage Trust will be talking about making a heritage inventory. The Town of Gibsons Heritage Commission will be using this to compile an inventory of the Town’s heritage buildings and sites. If you have information that would help the commission or would like to attend the workshop please contact Chris Marshall, Town Planner, at the Town of Gibsons, 886-2274. The commission is also looking for volunteers to work supervising the videos and helping during the week. Chris would love to hear from you. |

ANNUAL BRIDGE & CRIBBAGE On a sunny September Sunday afternoon, eager card players flocked to St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall for the annual bridge and cribbage gathering with the accompanying delicious strawberry cream tea. When play was over, many of the guests collected prizes while enjoying their tea. Thanks to Rosa Reid’s power of persuasion and the generosity of the community, there was an interesting assortment of prizes to be choose from. Many people asked when the next such afternoon would be arranged. Since this get-together usually takes place late winter, some of our annual guests had believed that they had somehow missed it last year. However, it had been postponed to the fall as the Heritage Society was totally involved with preparing for the opening of the Heritage Theatre. We hope this year, to get back on track. Our heartfelt thanks to Gibsons Building Supply, Quality Farms, Landing Clothing Store, Sunnycrest Photo, Gift of the Eagle and all those individuals who so kindly donated ingredients to contribute to the success of this afternoon. IGA graciously donated food items and the fixings for Diane Berdahl's annual feast of scones with jam and Devonshire cream. |

VOLUNTEER NIGHT The September 28th Volunteer sign-up night went well. It was wonderful evening filled with songs and laughter. Colleen Elson was our MC. Berni Garrison wowed us on the piano and especially at the end of the night when she showed us her exceptional talent as a singer. Penny Hudson’s dance troupe made our spirits soar amongst friends and neighbours. Ed Smith mesmerized us with his monologue “Drunk on the bar room floor”, Matthew Evans and the Elphinstone Improv tickled our funny bones with their hilarious skits . To conclude the evening Berni Garrison accompanied Daniel Neff on the piano, as he sang a ballad. The surveys helped us in our goal of trying to recruit more volunteers while finding out where their interests might lie. We specifically asked for help with cleaning, weeding, ushering, publicity, baking for and working in the concession, posting flyers. We also asked if anyone would be interested in adopting a bed in the yard year round. The Playhouse has been thoroughly cleaned and to Ruby Buick’s delight, the gardens are now weed free. All in all, it was a productive night and we recruited approximately 30 new volunteers into our ranks; something to be very proud of. We see the need for socialization amongst our volunteers, in order to foster a sense of teamwork and comfort in our workers. |

POTLUCK AND KARAOKE On November 29th we rented the hall at St Bartholomew’s Church to hold a Potluck and Karaoke for our volunteers. We acquired two new volunteers and seven people signed up on our special volunteer work forms. Ed White graced us with a beautiful prayer before dinner. After dinner, door prizes were given out and the Karaoke was started. Many helped to make the night a success, but a special thank you to Jenny Gipps and Diane Berdahl is in order. We hope that these events will continue and that we will are able to find other fun ways to spend time with our volunteers in the future. The donors for our event were
Guess who won the In Love Unlimited membership!! Under her husband’s watchful eye and the watchful eyes of her board of Directors she quickly gave it to her single friend. |

DONATIONS We still have a substantial debt to pay to the Sunshine Coast Credit Union. Without its generosity we would not have been able to open. We are also highly indebted to the guarantors of the interim financing which we got from the SCCU. We would obviously like to pay off our debt as soon as we possibly can. If you would care to make a donation towards debt reduction or towards our sound system, please don’t hesitate. All donations are tax deductible.
