The Dissociates

June 30 @ 2:00 pm

Staged reading of The Dissociates by Dorothy Dittrich

“Who knew a breakdown could be so entertaining. Dittrich spikes the text with bone-dry humour and plenty of wry observations…”
Kathleen Oliver, Georgia Straight

The Dissociates takes a darkly comic look at life and death, memory and healing. It is the story of Alex, a 50ish lesbian who finds herself dealing with the aftermath of a recent crisis. Working to repair her garden she tries to assess and reassess, often with broad strokes of gallows humour, how she got where she is. Will the life that Alex remembers prove to be her salvation?

“It’s a play about what can happen when we stop listening to ourselves and start pushing away thoughts and feelings that might be too difficult or painful to deal with,” says Dittrich. “It’s a story about a woman choosing to make a decision to let herself feel her story and live her life fully. It’s a story about courage.”
A reading of “The Dissociates” was performed last November here on the coast at the Heritage Playhouse, as part of the “Off the Page” play reading series. The enthusiastic response to that reading has led to the organization of this event. We are delighted to have the same cast along with two new performers.
Dittrich is an award winning playwright, musician and composer. Her most recent play “The Piano Teacher” was commissioned and produced by the Arts Club Theatre Company and went on to win the Jessie Richardson award for outstanding original script. Other work includes “If Moon Falls” “Tippi and Stan” and her award-winning musical “When We Were Singing” which has been presented in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto and The National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Dittrich makes her living as a musician, teacher and writer.

This event is produced by the ad hoc group “Friends of Dorothy”, with the support of “Off the Page” and is sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union. Other Sunshine Coast Pride Celebration events and information available at sunshinecoastpride.com.
